This should come as a surprise to absolutely no one, but Will Ferrell's comedy stylings have propelled "Step Brothers" to the top of the UK Chart this week thanks to a heartening £1.6 million opening weekend. Despite being on the receiving end of some critical barbs, "Step Brothers" rode on the crest of a Ferrell-shaped wave to wrench the top spot from "Hellboy II: The Golden Army". Still going strong at 2 is "Mamma Mia!". The ABBA-inspired musical has now taken some £54 million here in the UK making it by far and away this country's most watched film of the year. Kudos this week goes to the low budget horror "The Strangers". The Liv Tyler-starring psycho-thriller took a welcome £1.2 million in its first weekend of release from just 280 screens (that's 80 screens less than Ferrell's sibling rivalry).
Falling down from the top spot then is Guillermo del Toro's "Hellboy II: The Golden Army" at number 4. Big Red has witnessed a 65% fall in Box Office takings and has found itself vying for space with that other comic book veteran of the Chart. "The Dark Knight", well on its way to becoming one of the highest grossing films of all time, has fallen one place down to 5 this week taking its overall UK gross to £45.7 million. Having a hard time of it this side of the Atlantic is Steve Carrell and co. in "Get Smart". Having opened at number 3 last week, the spy spoof now finds itself in murky waters down at 6. This plight though is none more murkier than the situation Vin Diesel has found himself in. His "Babylon A.D." has been effectively branded DOA as it makes its debut at number 7 with a paltry £536,000 from 311 screens.
Dropping down three places to 8 this week is Adam Sandler in "You Don't Mess With The Zohan" with the "Wild Child" proving to be a bit hit-and-miss with those tweens down as it is at number 9. And rounding things off this week is that ever-lovable "WALL-E" at 10.
