Get very afraid to go back into the cinema - legendary horror filmmaker John Carpenter is returning to the big screen.

Carpenter, has directed genre classics like Halloween, The Thing (pic) and Assault on Precinct 13. Now he is planning a return visit behind the camera for the first time since 2001s Ghost of Mars.

He will direct the creepy ghost story The Ward for independent studio Echo Lake, reports Variety. Pineapple Express' Amber Heard stars in the horror film, which tells the tale of a hunted woman in a mental institution.

It's Echo Lake's first dip in the water of more mainstream fare after making modest hits out of dramas like Tsotsi, the Oscar winner for Best Foreign Language Film of the Year in 2006; and Away From Her, which saw Julie Christie receive Oscar and BAFTA nominations after taking home the 2008 Best Performance by an Actress in a Drama Golden Globe for her performance as an Alzheimer's sufferer.

So we should be able expect quality Carpenter if that, albeit short, track record stands for anything!
