Cate Blanchett was left with a nasty head wound during a performance on stage.

The Oscar winning actress was performing in a stage production of a Streetcar Named Desire at the Sydney Theatre Company, when she was accidentally hit on the head with a radio during a scene with her co-star Joel Edgerton.

The performance. which left Blanchett with a gashed head, was cancelled following the incident.

A spokesperson for the company, which Blanchett and her husband Andrew Upton are joint artistic directors of, said, "There was a minor incident on stage that unfortunately did injure Cate. There was a moment when another actor lifted the prop above his head and she somehow sustained a minor blow to the head."

He said that Cate was now "absolutely fine".
