One man who is not toasting the success of The Dark Knight is X-Files star David Duchovny. The actor blames the Batman flick's overwhelming success for the X-Files movie's disappointing box office performance.

The X-Files: I Want To Believe took just $10 million in ticket sales last weekend, compared to The Dark Knight's second week takings of $75.6.

Duchovny said: "I'd prefer if it was a huge hit, but there are mitigating circumstances. We happened to open on the worst day in the history of cinema - the second week of Batman. The only thing worse would be to open with Batman and nobody would've done that."

However, he could also have blamed Abba musical Mamma Mia! and comedy Step Brothers both of which also took more than X-Files last week while this week the film dropped to number 9, one place above Space Chimps.

Despite the poor box office showing Duchovny remains optimistic and maintains that, given the film's relatively low budget, it has not been a disaster.

"We're competing for the same audience with what they're saying will be the highest grossing film of all time," he said. "What saves us is that we only cost $29 million to make. We're a small movie masquerading as a blockbuster."
