Crocodile Hunter comes a cropper

Australians are in mourning following the news that Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin has been killed by a stingray during a diving expedition.

The 44 year-old naturalist died after being hit in the chest by a stingray's barb while filming a documentary with his 10 year-old son off the Great Barrier Reef.

Police in Queensland told the BBC: "It is believed that Mr Irwin collapsed after being stung by a stingray at Batt Reef off Port Douglas at about 1100 (0100 GMT),"

"His crew called for medical treatment and the Queensland medical helicopter responded. However Mr Irwin had died."

Steve 'Crikey' Irwin was known all over the world for his television show The Crocodile Hunter, his movie Collision Course and his charity work with native Australian wildlife. He leaves behind a wife and two young children.
