Despite going down as well as an empty stocking come Christmas Day at the US Box Office, festive comedy "Fred Claus" has fared decidedly better this side of the pond sitting as it does atop the UK Box Office Christmas tree. With a healthy £1.9 million opening weekend "Fred Claus" managed to fend off some stiff competition from computer adaptation "Hitman" - itself recouping £1.2 million whilst showing on almost 100 fewer screens than its Xmas counterpart.
Falling two places from the top spot then is "American Gangster" with monster slayer "Beowulf" taking a similar stumble on its way down the chart. At 5, and still going strong, is "Stardust" continuing its epic struggle with "Ratatouille" which finds itself at number 6 this week. Spluttering at 7 is Wes Anderson's "The Darjeeling Limited", however this poor performance was still enough to outdo former chart-topper "Good Luck Chuck" which falls to 8 with this week's second lowest screen average.
Holding up the chart this week is a pair of new entries, both receiving limited runs but showing strong gains nonetheless. In at 9 is Brad Pitt's Western eulogy "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford" (longest title EVER!) making £180,000 from only 60 screens. And a new entry at 10 is Bollywood rom-com "Aaja Nachle" almost bettering the famous outlaw on even fewer screens!
