Away From Her was the big winner at the Genie Awards, Canada's equivalent of the Oscars.

The drama about a couple dealing with the onset of Alzheimer's won seven awards, including best film and best director (Sarah Polley).

It also earned the nods in the main acting categories, with both Gordon Pinsent and Julie Christie winning awards.

Local hero David Cronenberg was the other big winner of the night, his thriller Eastern Promises, set among Russian gangsters in London, also won seven gongs, including those for best screenplay and best supporting actor (Armin Mueller-Stahl).
