Tom Cruise is apparently incensed that a new strain of medical marijuana carrying his name is being sold in California.

The "Tom Cruise Purple" brand features the hysterically laughing face of the famously drug-free Scientologist and actor and is openly available in licensed marijuana clubs in the north of the state. The strain is said to be particularly strong and users can experience hallucinations.

Cruise has claimed that Scientology, a religion which opposes any kind of psychotropic drug use, is the world's leading authority on weaning addicts away from their habit.

A friend of the Mission Impossible star is said to have found it "outrageous" that such a product is being promoted using his squeaky-clean image.

It is understood that Cruise's lawyers are now seeking to sue the manufacturers.
