In nary two and half weeks Will Smith's blockbusting 'last man of Earth' effort has taken £18.5 million at the UK Box Office! Having grossed a further £3.7 million in this week alone, to comfortably hang on to the top spot, "I Am Legend" looks set to steal a march on the top ten highest grossing films of last year. The Richard Matheson apocalyptic adaptation had very little competition this week for its crown. After a slow burn over the Holiday period, Hilary Swank's "P.S. I Love You" jumped an impressive eight places to 2 this week no doubt thanks to a large dose of the New Year Blues compelling people to seek out lighter fare.
All told, the first week of business in 2008 has been a strong one with the top six films all grossing over £1 million. In at 3 is Disney's "Enchanted" having narrowly stayed ahead of "St. Trinian's". Falling three places to 5 is fantasy epic "The Golden Compass" with "Alvin and the Chipmunks" refusing to surrender their Chart position at 6.
At 7 Jerry Seinfeld's "Bee Movie" is still making buzziness (sorry) and Marc Forster's "The Kite Runner" falls to 8. Rounding up the UK Box Office this week is ping-pong comedy "Balls of Fury" at 9 with the only new entry resting at 10 in the form of Ang Lee's "Lust, Caution".
