James McAvoy admits he and co-star Anne Hathaway often clashed while filming new costume drama Becoming Jane.

The Last King Of Scotland star plays Anne's love interest Tom Lefroy in the film and is full of praise for Devil Wears Prada star Anne, although he did admit they're both very headstrong. "Yeah we did [clash on set], I think it's quite healthy," James told us. "When you get into a situation where one actor is just accommodating the other, it's not really creative. But I wouldn't mess around with Anne! The differences were always creative though - never personal."

But James said working with stars like Anne, Julie Walters, Maggie Smith, James Cromwell and the late Ian Richardson was good fun. "Unless you get a right bunch of d***s, I think you generally have a good camaraderie, and certainly so on this one," he explained.

"Julie Walters was a hoot to work with man, brilliant. I've always wanted to work with her. And I loved working with Ian Richardson. I'm very sorry he passed away recently - I was honoured to work with him on one of his final jaunts."
