Johnny Depp went from movie star to real-life hero when his quick-thinking saved the lives of a group of extras on the set of his latest film.
The Pirates of the Caribbean star was filming the new crime drama Public Enemies when a stunt driver lost control of his 1933 Ford after speeding across an icy patch. The heartthrob actor ran to a huddle of six unsuspecting extras and saved them from the impending collision.
An onlooker said: “Johnny slammed into the group with arms outspread, shoving them all back.”
The 44-year-old's heroic act stands in stark contrast to the character he plays in the forthcoming film. Depp stars as John Dillinger, a legendary depression-era bank robber, hunted by federal agent Christian Bale.
The all-star cast also includes Oscar-winner Marion Cotillard as Dillinger's girlfriend and Billy Crudup as notorious FBI chief J. Edgar Hoover.
The film, directed by Miami Vice's Michael Mann is due for release next year.
