James McAvoy feared he would be typecast as a "rent boy" when he first got into acting.

The actor has managed to forge a versatile career so far since starring in 2007s Last King of Scotland, including playing an action hero in Wanted and a romantic leading man in sweeping epic Atonement.

However, he admits he was worried that his strong Scottish accent would leave him at the mercy of typecasting.

He said, "I went to drama school knowing I could do angry young working-class men from Scotland. And I thought, 'I'll probably come out being able to do that better, and I can play angry young rent boys or hooligans.'

"But it taught me how to liberate myself from class, locale, environment, the whole thing and just give yourself to being someone else."
