David Chase, creator of the TV classic The Sopranos, has struck a deal to make a film for movie powerhouse Paramount.
Unusually for a first-time director, he will get complete creative freedom, including final cut, for the film, which will not be a revival of the hugely popular gangster series.
"He's been there, done that," an insider told Variety. "He's moving on."
Chase, who wrote, produced and directed The Sopranos, has a long-term association with Paramount chairman Brad Grey, who described him as "one of the great storytellers of our time." His movie debut is "long overdue", Grey added.
"We always talked about getting David into the Paramount fold," Grey said. "Three years ago (when I took over Paramount), I said I wanted to bring the greatest talents to the lot. David exemplifies that."
