Zooey making album with indie cult icon

Scarlett Johansson, Lindsay Lohan... it seems every young Hollywood starlet needs an album these days. And Zooey Deschanel is the latest to make the journey from film to recording studio.

The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy star has made an album with American indie-folk cult favourite M Ward, to be released on the achingly hip Domino, home to Franz Ferdinand and Arctic Monkeys.

Despite Zooey's look, which verges on the goth, Volume One will be a throwback to the Sixties glory days of Dusty Springfield, The Zombies and analogue recordings.

The Failure To Launch star has written nine of the songs, with the remaining two being covers, including one of The Beatles' I should Have Known Better.

Zooey was slated to play Janis Joplin in the biopic of the tragic star, though that project has now been put on hold. Don't expect her to be delivering Joplin-esque blues belters, though.

She readily admits she sounds nothing like her: "I'm a singer, but I don't sing like her naturally my voice is not like that

"Her voice was very raw and very gravelly and rough, extremely volatile. I was doing a lot of training for that and a lot of work on the character."

Volume One will be released July 14, preceded one week earlier by the single This Is Not A Test.
