If you want the finest in 'sage-like' character actors then who are you going to call (and please don't say "Ghostbusters"!)....Max Von Sydow and Pete Postlethwaite that's who. The pair's combined talent could boost any film and it has been recently announced that they are to lend their considerable talents to "Solomon Kane" alongside James Purefoy in the titular role.
Also along for the ride is Rachel Hurd-Wood ("Perfume: The Story of a Murderer"), Alice Krige (Trekkies might remember her as the Borg Queen from "Star Trek: First Contact" where she stole the whole show) and Mackenzie Crook (he from "The Office" and "Pirates of the Caribbean" fame). Making this announcement was the film's Paris-based producer-distributor Samuel Hadida, head of Davis Films.
"Solomon Kane" is based on the series of pulp novels by "Conan" author Robert E. Howard that first appeared on the shelves way back in the 1920's and 1930's. Set in the 16th century, a soldier tormented by the evil that he has been responsible for, seeks to save his soul by battling a malevolent power that threatens to destroy all things (think "The Witchfinder General" meets "Van Helsing" and you should be half way there).
Shooting is due to begin in Prague this month under the auspices of director Michael J. Bassett ("Deathwatch") from his own adapted screenplay.
