Roland Emmerich certainly seems to have the Midas touch when it comes to ringing those Box Office tills. His films may not be high art (see for instance "The Day After Tomorrow") but they please the masses. And his latest venture, the pre-historic yarn that is "10,000 BC", has pulled in a very pleasing $36 million over the weekend to take the top spot stateside. That gross was more than double what its nearest rival could muster - the Disney family comedy "College Road Trip" parked up in at number 2 with a fairly limp $14 million opening weekend.
Dropping two places to number 3 is last week's chart-topper "Vantage Point", US audiences coming to their senses and realising that the thriller is in fact not thrilling at all and just a little rubbish. Similarly Will Ferrell's "Semi-Pro" has witnessed a monumental drop-off in returns and found itself at number 4 this week. Perhaps the greatest success story of the weekend is "The Bank Job". This very British caper managed to rustle up $6 million in lose change to debut at number 5.
Falling three places to 6 is the Nickelodeon fantasy "The Spiderwick Chronicles" jostling for space with amorous Tudor drama "The Other Boleyn Girl" at 7. "Jumper" continues its slide down the chart at 8 with "Step Up 2: The Streets" quick-stepping it down to 9. And this week's 'must try harder' award goes to "Fool's Gold" the romance/adventure bowing out at 10 having amassed a respectful $62 million in domestic returns.
