In fairness there was little competition out there to trouble Zack Snyder's epic comic book adaptation but nonetheless "Watchmen" has stormed to the top of the UK Box Office Chart with an incredible £3.2 million opening weekend (and a monumental screen average of £7,740). It needed something suitably grand to take down "Slumdog Millionaire" and the Oscar-winning effort has slipped down to number 2 this week in the face of Snyder's colourful superheroes. Similarly sliding one place down the Chart this week is Clint Eastwood in "Gran Torino", the Screen Legend only seeing a slight drop-off in takings for his final onscreen performance. This week's only other new entry then comes in the sprightly form of Emily Blunt as "The Young Victoria". Despite some strong word of mouth this lush period romp could only manage a £1 million debut to crash in at number 4.
Continuing his descent from the top is Disney's latest bout of CGI cuteness in "Bolt" as the little super-canine finds himself rather adrift at number 5 as does Isla Fisher and her dwindling credit in "Confessions of a Shopaholic" at number 6. Falling four places meanwhile to number 7 is the distinctly unscary horror of "The Unborn" with the much more terrifying prospect of "Hotel for Dogs" still doing business at number 8.
Clive Owen is treading water down at 9 with "The International" as so-so rom-com "He's Just Not That Into You" bids farewell to the Chart as it props up the rest down at number 10.
