Ice Age 2 has become the first film this year to take over $100m at the US box office. In its second week of release the animated sequel claimed the number one spot of a top ten that saw another follow-up - the much-hyped Basic Instinct 2 - disappear altogether.

The cartoon blockbuster has takings of $116.4m, with its second week receipts keeping it well ahead of baseball comedy The Benchwarmers in second and Antonio Banderas' ballroom-set Take The Lead in third.

Spike Lee's glossy thriller Inside Man, starring Denzel Washington and Jodie Foster, is at four and Lucky Number Slevin, which has already opened in the UK, debuts at five.

But for Sharon Stone and British director Michael Caton-Jones the chart brought only bad news as Basic Instinct 2's disastrous opening saw it fall from last week's number ten placing.

The film garnered universally terrible reviews, with one critic dubbing it the "comedy sensation of the year" - words no erotic thriller wants to hear!
