Mission: Impossible 3 may have had a modest opening in the US but Tom Cruise's latest movie topped the UK cinema chart in its opening weekend, taking £5.4m.
The thriller ended Ice Age 2: The Meltdown's four-week run at the top.
British improvised rom-com Confetti opened at number two but way behind in takings, raking in £635,072. Ice Age was third while game adaptation Silent Hill starring Sean Bean took fourth place and Bruce Willis' police thriller 16 Blocks fell to fifth.
