Director Ang Lee has repeated the success he enjoyed two years ago with Brokeback Mountain at the Venice Film Festival by winning the Golden Lion with his latest movie Se, Jie (Lust, Caution).

Lee dedicated his victory to influential Swedish director Ingmar Bergman, who died in July.

Cate Blanchett won the Best Actress prize for her challenging role as Bob Dylan in the biopic I'm Not There, while Brad Pitt was received the Best Actor gong for The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford. The stars were not in Venice to collect their awards as most have now arrived at the Toronto Festival.

Other winners included Brian De Palma, getting Best Direction for Iraq war film Redacted and veteran British director Ken Loach, who picked up Best Screenplay for It's A Free World. Italian director Bernardo Bertolucci was presented with a special award for his career's work, which includes Last Tango In Paris, The Last Emperor and Stealing Beauty.
