Terry Gilliam says he's "delighted" Heath Ledger's final screen outing will be released.

Filming on The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus was suspended in January, following the star's sudden death.

But Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell and Jude Law stepped in, each of them playing a different aspect of Ledger's character.

Gilliam. a former member of the Monty Python comedy team, said, "I am grateful to Johnny, Colin and Jude for coming on board and to everyone else who has made it possible for us to finish the film.

"I am delighted that Heath's brilliant performance can be shared with the world."

It has been reported that the film uses the device of a magical mirror transporting people into other dimensions, allowing Ledger's part to be played by other actors.

Producers have reassured fans that Ledger's performance will not be delivered through the sort of special effects used by the makers of Gladiator to complete Oliver Reed's role after he died during filming.

A statement said, "Since the format of the story allows for the preservation of his entire performance, at no point will Heath's work be modified or altered through the use of digital technology," they said.

"Each of the parts played by Johnny, Colin and Jude is representative of the many aspects of the character that Heath was playing."
