Natalie Portman has signed on to star as Cathy Earnshaw in a big screen adaptation of Wuthering Heights.

It's not the first time Emily Bronte's classic novel has been made for the big screen - with the 1939 version starring Merle Oberon and Laurence Olivier considered to be the definitive adaptation. The book centres on the doomed romance between Cathy and Heathcliff.

Girl With a Pearl Earring's Olivia Hetreed will write the screenplay, while The Edge of Love's John Maybury will direct.

Hanway Films boss Tim Haslam said, "Natalie is without a doubt one of the most acclaimed actresses of her generation.

"Combined with visionary director John Maybury, this promises to be a fresh, exciting version of a classic love story."

Portman has already had period costume experience - she was recently seen alongside Scarlett Johansson and Eric Bana in The Other Boleyn Girl.

The part of Heathcliff has not yet been cast.
