He may be one of Hollywood's biggest ever stars but Jack Nicholson insists there was a time when no one would ever cast him in a movie.

The Shining star was 32 before he got his break in 1969s Easy Rider but prior to that he struggled to get any acting jobs other than cheesy low budget movies.

Nicholson recalled, "Until Easy Rider, Roger Corman was the only guy that would hire me! You were kind of segregated when you did cheap movies in those days.

"I hadn't totally given up but I definitely thought that I was going to be a director and then Easy Rider came along and made my career go 'boom'."

As did the ageing lothario's love life.
