Meryl Streep has called for the Oscars to be moved forward over fears that it's becoming irrelevant.

The annual ceremony was traditionally held in March, but was moved a month back in 2004 to stop bigger films having an advantage over smaller movies by using long running expensive advertising campaigns. However, despite the change of date it's still the last ceremony of the film awards season.

Streep told Entertainment Weekly, "As time has gone on, so many other televised award shows precede the Oscars, and I do think that's diluted their importance. Everybody seems exhausted by the time the same people have trampled up onstage at the Golden Globes, the SAGs, the Broadcast Film Critics, the Baftas. There are so many now and they're all on TV.

"You wanna see some real acting? Watch somebody who's won five times before they to the Oscars, then they get up onstage and they do the performance of, 'Oh, yes!' Wow, that's a big job!"

The multiple Oscar winner added, "I think the Academy should move it up to 1 January and preempt everybody else. That is the Big Kahuna."
