People have been telling me for years now that my opinion means absolutely nothing....and they just maybe on to something. After labelling " National Treasure: Book of Secrets" as 'redundant' and 'poor sequel fodder', Nicolas Cage's sophomore outing as the tomb-raiding Benjamin Gates has only gone and secured the top spot at the UK Box Office with a formidable £2.4 million opening weekend.
But just to put things in to a little context, this Jerry Bruckheimer-produced behemoth only just managed to squeeze past the second-placed indie sensation "Juno", which aired in 130 fewer screens than the chart topping "National Treasure 2" whilst taking a cool £2 million and notching up a healthier screen average to boot. Slipping down the chart then is monster hit "Cloverfield"" taking a breather down at number 3 with "Sweeney Todd" hanging up his razor at 4.
Another of this week's new entries is "Water Horse: Legend of the Deep" at 5 - a decidedly poor showing for such a family-friendly fantasy. But even worse off is the rom-com "Definitely, Maybe", which makes its bow at number 6 in the chart (surely the worst debut by a Working Title release for quite some time?!).
Plunging headlong down the chart is Eva Longoria-Parker's "Over Her Dead Body" falling four places to 7. Similarly, modern day fairytale "Penelope" finds itself down at number 8 after making an impressive impact last week. Despite a strong showing at this week's BAFTAs, "No Country for Old Men" is on its way out of the chart at number 9 and, praise be, "Alvin and the Chipmunks" have run out of favour as they prop up this week's chart at number 10.
