Jolie: 'UN work made me despair'

Angelina Jolie has spoken about her humanitarian work, revealing that the horrors she witnessed made her despair so much she cried "for two years".

The actress, mother-of-three and partner of Brad Pitt is well-known for her worldwide charity work with the UN, but Angelina says she was initially worried her fame would bring negative publicity to the good causes.

"It took me a while to agree to do it. I guess I saw that so many times the picture comes before the knowledge and the substance and I certainly didn't want to do that to myself or the organisation. And also, I really just was shy," she told Newsweek.

"[But I realised] if I can draw you in a little because I'm familiar, then that's great. Because I know that at the end you're not looking at me, you're looking at them."

Meanwhile, Angelina has been talking to director Clint Eastwood about starring in his next film, The Changeling.

Based on true events in 1920s Los Angeles, it's about a woman whose son is abducted but later found. The mother begins to suspect, however, that the child is not her son and must battle police corruption to discover the truth. The cast will be confirmed in coming weeks, with filming due to start this summer.
