Comic book movie Iron Man has shown its strength by holding off Speed Racer to top the US box office for the second week.
The big budget movie, which stars Robert Downey Jar as a billionaire playboy arms dealer who decides to use his wealth and power for good by becoming the superhero Iron Man, took $50 million at the box office. It has now made $150 million in America alone since its release two weeks ago.
It flattened its nearest rival Speed Racer, which could only manage $20 million in its first week. Warner Bros, which released the film, said the racing action movie "didn't perform to our expectations". The film, which is made by The Matrix directors the Wachowski brothers, will struggle to recoup the movie's $120 million budget.
Cameron Diaz and Ashton Kutcher's wedding caper What Happens In Vegas made its debut in third place.
Fourth and fifth place was also dominated by comedies - the latest Judd Apatow outing Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Tina Frey surrogate comedy Baby Mama respectively.
