From wizards to "Twilight" vampires for Pattinson

Yes, ladies and gents this marks what can only be described as a slow news day as word reaches us that Robert Pattinson, he who played the ill-fated Cedric Diggory in "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire", has swapped his broomstick for a heartily sized cross and handfuls of garlic for "Twilight", Summit Entertainment's new teen-vampire property.

Pattinson will take on the role of Edward, a teenager who leads a double life as a vampire (who doesn't?!) and gets all weak at the knees for his non-vampire high school classmate Bella (played by "Panic Room" star Kristen Stewart).

Despite the teen-happy slant on this vampire outing (like a more toothy "Dawson's Creek" by the sounds of it) it has been given a huge does of respectability thanks to Catherine Hardwicke stepping behind the camera. Hardwicke previously helmed hard-hitting teen drama "Thirteen".

"Twilight" will be based on Stephanie Meyer's best-selling young-adult novel of the same name. Meyer authored two sequels so depending on the success of this first outing a franchise may be in the offing.
