Billy Crystal is going to get a 60th birthday present he will never forget - he will play for the New York Yankees.

The When Harry Met Sally actor is a huge fan of the baseball giants, and to reward him for his "undying love" for the team the Yankees are letting Crystal wear the number 60 shirt in an exhibition match against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday - the day before his milestone birthday.

"I've been waiting 50 years for this call. I'm overwhelmed by the generosity of the Yankees and commissioner (Bud) Selig," he said.

"I know this'll be tougher than the Broadway Softball League, but I'm looking forward to helping the younger players - which by the way, is all of them."

The funnyman had to sign a year contract to play for the team, and the Yankees coach Joe Giradi admits he still doesn't know where to play Crystal, who was the captain of his high school baseball team.

"Billy Crystal has done a lot for this organisation," he said.

"He's always been a big part of it. This is our way of rewarding him, saying thanks for everything you've done."
