As we all know games-to-film adaptations tend to vary in quality...actually, scratch that - almost all thus far have been universally bad (eye-gougingly bad infact). Note for instance this year's "Hitman", a truly anaemic action pic that betrayed its rich source material. In fairness though "Silent Hill" is probably the closest that we've come to seeing justice served on the big screen for gamers everywhere.
If you were given a choice as to which gaming property you would like to see given the celluloid treatment next then no doubt Konami's "Metal Gear Solid" would be high on everyone's wish list (the games are positively cinematic in their scope anyway!). And producer Michael De Luca is certainly not messing around with this one. Whilst out promoting his latest venture, the high-stakes thriller "21", those good people at ComingSoon.Net managed to get a word in with De Luca regarding the future for Solid Snake and co.
And it would seem, with the writers strike done and dusted, De Luca and Columbia Pictures have got firmly back on track and are currently searching out for a director to take the lead on the project. The name in the frame is that of Kurt Wimmer, the man behind "Equilibrium" (great) and "Ultraviolet" (not so great). Wimmer seems a great choice though, a writer/director adept at choreographing action and realising dystopian, military-ruled, worlds. De Luca is looking to meet Wimmer in the next few weeks to talk about him writing the script (and presumably directing) - expect an official announcement soon.
