Teen horror movie Prom Night has given its rivals a fright after it stormed straight to the top of the box office in the US.
The remake of the 1980 cult classic stars Brittany Snow and Scott Porter as teenagers attending their senior prom. Problems start when a sadistic killer from the past also attends the party. The original starred Leslie Nielsen (in his pre-spoof days) and Jamie Lee Curtis.
The remake became the highest grossing film in America after racking up $22.7 million in its opening weekend.
Another new entry, Street Kings, was in second place taking $12 million. The crime corruption thriller stars Keanu Reeves and Forest Whitaker. Last week's number one film, 21, came third, while family film Nim's Island and George Clooney comedy Leatherheads came fourth and fifth respectively.
Ellen Page's indie comedy Smart People came in seventh place after taking $4.2 million.
