Mann's plan to get spy tale in the can

"Heat", "Miami Vice", "Collateral" and "The Insider" director Michael Mann is set to make a movie for Columbia Pictures based on the tragic true-life story of Alexander Litvinenko, the former KGB agent fatally poisoned in London last year. "Death of a Dissident" will be based on a book Litvinenko's widow is currently co-writing.

There's been no word yet if the Mann project will have an impact on another proposed film to be based on the same subject, "Sasha's Story: The Life and Death of a Russian Spy", which Johnny Depp and Warner Bros optioned last week, but apparently the two studios were both vying for the screen rights to the Litvineenko's widow's forthcoming book.
