ESPN Films has agreed to co-produce Robert Redford's forthcoming film about legendary African-American baseball player Jackie Robinson and his team Brooklyn Dodgers' general manager Branch Rickey.

The as-yet-untitled film focusses on the pair's struggle to break baseball’s colour barrier in the 1940s.

Redford will co-produce and star as Rickey in the film which has the approval of Robinson’s widow, Rachel, Branch Rickey Jr. and Major League Baseball.

"I am delighted that ESPN will be joining with Wildwood, Baldwin/Cohen Productions, and me, to help bring our story to the world," said Rachel Robinson. "Having lived it, I fervently hope that the passionate team we have assembled thus far will protect our story and bring it to fruition.”
