All of a sudden "Hancock" doesn't look so indestructible. Barely two weeks into its general release, Will Smith's reluctant superhero has come under a Box Office barrage courtesy of Meryl Streep and a singing former 007. "Mamma Mia!", based on the ever popular Broadway stage show, has pulled the rug out from under Big Willie and has thusly claimed the top spot with an impressive £6.5 million opening weekend. "Hancock" then has had to settle for second place and that's despite bagging £16.7 million since its debut last week (ensuring that Smith's sci-fi breaks into the top ten highest grossers for the year). Similarly going strong, and showing no signs of letting up, is "Kung Fu Panda" - DreamWorks' martial arts 'toon safely ensconced at number 3.
Another new entry this week is "Journey to the Center of the Earth" at 4. Brendan Fraser's 3D 'opus' barely managing to scoop up £1 million at the Box Office and that's despite its novelty Real-D draw. Down at 5 meanwhile is the dark and broody "The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian" displaying just enough fight left to keep Jackie Chan and Jet Li at bay. The high-kicking masters find themselves new at number 6 in "The Forbidden Kingdom". Plunging down three places to number 7 is Timur Bekmembatov's "Wanted" with Carrie and co. also taking a dive down to number 8 this week in "Sex and the City".
After four weeks on general release, Noel Clarke's "Adulthood" has finally taken a body blow and stumbled down to number 9 with Frank Darabont's "The Mist" still riding the coat-tails of some great reviews to stay in the Chart at 10.
