American Gangster has proved to be both a hit at the cinema and music stores with rapper Jay-Z going straight to number one in the US charts with his album that was inspired by the film.
The 'concept album' came together after Jay-Z saw a preview of the Ridley Scott-directed picture, which sees Denzel Washington playing a heroin dealer in '70s Harlem. Russell Crow is the cop determined to capture his man.
"It immediately clicked with me," the rapper said.
And it definitely has clicked with audiences. The album went straight to the top spot selling 425,000 copies, and the rapper's tenth number one album means he has now tied with Elvis Presley as the solo artists with the most number one hits. Only The Beatles had more number ones with 19.
The film American Gangster has also enjoyed success, making $80 million at the US box office in two weeks.
Jay-Z will broadcast his New York gig last Sunday from his American Gangster tour on music.msn.com/jayz from November 19.
