Leonardo Di Caprio is rumoured to be playing James Bond creator Ian Flemming in a big screen biopic.

The Departed actor has signed on as producer of Flemming, which charts the life story of the colourful British author and journalist who created the famed superspy.

Another producer on the film Andrew Lazar said, "It's going to be very different from the Bond films. There are a lot of different ways to crack biopics, but we're not trying to emulate a Bond movie . . . The idea that this guy's life informed the James Bond character is pretty fascinating."

The film's screenwriter Damian Stevenson said, "It's the real James Bond. In England, Ian Fleming's exploits are much better well known. Talking to people out here, no one had any idea that M was based on a real person, Miss Moneypenny was based on a real person."

It's expected that DiCaprio will be playing the title role. And if it happens it won't be the first time that the actor has gone the biopic route following his roles as conman Frank Abagnale Jr in Catch Me If You Can and Howard Hughes in The Aviator.
