Clooney and Hoffman take Globes

Two very different roles picked up the acting talent awards at this year's Golden Globes. Neither film has reached the UK yet and actually might not be the biggest crowd pullers when they do.

Philip Seymour Hoffman will come as no stranger to filmgoers having popped up in a myriad of films over the years, usually playing a misfit. Some say his performance as Truman Capote in Capote is yet another misfit role, but he's received the award for Best Actor in a Drama for his sterling performance which has had critics right across the United States dumbfounded by the accuracy and nuances he's exhibited playing the author of In Cold Blood, let alone keeping up that strange nasal voice the character has.

George Clooney is another favourite at award ceremonies. The hunk has a wealth of films lined up for release in 2006. First out of the blocks will be Goodnight, and Good Luck, set during the McCarthy communist witchhunt years, which he directs as well as having a supporting role. However, he received a Golden Globe for a startling portrait of a CIA career man in Syriana. Bedecked with full beard George co-stars with his close pal Matt Damon and takes a production credit on the film too. His role's a supporting part and gives him the Best Actor in supporting role gong.
