The little town of Vulcan in Atlanta has failed to land the premiere of the new Star Trek movie.
Producers of the film were apparently grateful for the town's efforts to stage the premiere, considering it doesn't actually have a cinema. Organisers had planned to convert a high school gym into a cinema for the event. However, it would have taken too much time to get a screen, projectors and sound system in place ahead of the film's May 8 release date.
It's not all bad news for the town that shares its name with the Star Trek race that spawned Spock (pic - and yes Trekkies it's true he is only half Vulcan). Reps have been invited to a special promo-screening in nearby Calgary.
Dayna Dickens, Vulcan tourism co-ordinator said: “Granted, we don’t have Hollywood coming but we’ve opened up an awful lot of doors for the community. We’ve received tremendous support from all over the world.”
Dickens is currently negotiating with CBS, the network that owns the copyright to Star Trek, for Vulcan to become an officially-licensed Start Trek destination.
Star Trek is directed by Lost and Cloverfield's JJ Abrams, and will look at the early days of Captain James T. Kirk, Dr Spock and their fellow USS Enterprise crew members.
The new Star Trek movie will see rising star Chris Pine play Kirk, while Heroes Zachary Quinto portrays Spock. Eric Bana, Winona Ryder and British actor Simon Pegg are also among the cast, as is original Spock Leonard Nimoy.
