Kate Hudson has found being in a more adult romantic comedy My Best Friend's Girl a refreshing break from her previous tamer films.

Since being Oscar nominated in 2000's Almost Famous, the actress, whose mother is Goldie Hawn, has appeared in light rom-coms such as How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, You, Me and Dupree and Fool's Gold.

In My Best Friend's Girl she stars with American Pie actor Jason Biggs and comedian Dane Cook and gets to use more colourful, everyday language.

"It's a first for me because I've never been in an R-rated movie." she said.

"You get to curse a lot more and you get to have a lot more freedom. Censorship is weird sometimes, it's definitely confining so this was a lot more freedom."

In the film, Biggs's character hires his friend, played by Cook, to take his ex-(Hudson) out on a deliberately dreadful date intended to make her realise that he wasn't a bad boyfriend after all.

The 29-year-old beauty, who says she is "totally single" admits she's had some bad dates in real life including one she abandoned "before we even ordered food because the guy was just so deeply boring".

However she does give advice for potential boyfriends: "I like to be surprised (with) something fun or something different, like racing cars... or miniature golf or something. If you're going to go on a date, do it right, you know?"
