Tom Hanks is to receive a prestigious honour at the Lincoln Center's 36th annual film gala in New York.

The society's director Kent Jones praised the 52-year-old saying he has, "set a very high standard for his fellow actors." He is also quoted by the BBC as saying, "There are so few actors who have been able to make the struggle and drama of being a good man compelling," and further gushed about the actor's "talent, his presence, his versatility".

The Forrest Gump and Philadelphia star follows another multi-Oscar winner, Meryl Streep, who was the recipient of the honour last year.

The Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts is home to 12 arts organisations including Film Society of Lincoln Center and Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts.
