Bizarre casting rumour of the day: Russell Crowe is reportedly being lined up to play Bill Clinton in a biopic of the former US president.

The Gladiator actor is wanted by the makers of the film The Special Relationship to play the charismatic Clinton.

An insider told The Daily Express: "Russell is currently our favourite to play Clinton. He might not initially appear the obvious choice but it's felt he could turn out to be ideal.

"It's understood his involvement could be confirmed early next year."

The film, which tells the story of Tony Blair and Bill Clinton's relationship during their time as their respective nation's leaders, will reportedly once again star Michael Sheen as Blair.

The film will see screenwriter Peter Morgan make his directorial debut, having previously written TV movie The Deal and Oscar-winner The Queen. Both films featured Sheen in the Tony Blair role.
