Sci-fi film jumps to top spot

Sci-fi action film Jumper has leapt to the number one spot at the US box office.

The movie, which is directed by Doug Liman and stars Hayden Christensen, Samuel L Jackson and Jamie Bell, took $27.2 million in its first three days.

It tells the story of a young man (Christensen) who is blessed with teleporting abilities fighting off a group of secret agents, led by Jackson, who want to rid the world of 'jumpers'. (That is other teleporters, not the garment)

It knocked last week's number one film Fool's Gold off the top spot. The Romantic comedy which star's Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey fell to fourth place.

Step Up 2 The Streets came in second place, earning $19.7 million. Fantasy epic The Spiderwick Chronicles, based on the popular children's books, came in third place taking 19.1 million.

Romantic comedy Definitely Maybe, which stars Ryan Reynolds and Isla Fisher, came in fifth place, with $9.7 million
