The Braveheart star, known as a devout Catholic, was spotted dining out with the troubled singer at the weekend, sparking reports that he might be trying to get her to join his congregation.
But a friend of Gibson's, quoted in Access Hollywood, says, ""He has not asked her to sing at his church. He is trying to help her."
Britney has been placed in involuntary psychiatric care twice already this year, while Gibson has had problems of his own. The actor was ordered to undergo rehabilitation for alcohol problems after being caught drink-driving and firing a famously anti-semitic volley of abuse at the arresting officer.
He was recently praised by the judge hearing his case for successfully completing alcohol rehabilitation treatment.
