Heather Ledger was once linked to star in the forthcoming screen adaptation of Chuck Palahniuk's book Choke.
The controversial writer has revealed several A-list celebrities were expected to star in the new dark comedy, which tells the story of a sex addict who pretends to choke in restaurants in a bid to chat up ladies.
The part of sex addict Victor Mancine is played by Sam Rockwell, but several high profile names were circling the role including the late actor Heath Ledger.
Palahniuk recalled, "For a long time it was supposed to be Ryan Gosling, who I couldn't see, and for a brief period of time it was supposed to be Heath Ledger, which I wasn't sure about. And so in a way I think it's turned out for the very best."
The writer also revealed that the part of Victor's mother, who is played by Angelica Huston, was also sought after by two Oscar winning actresses.
"It's the same with the mother character... for a while it was Susan Sarandon and then for a little tiny bit it was Helen Mirren. But then with The Queen, apparently her price went way up and they couldn't afford her anymore!"
Choke is released on Friday.
