Nicole Kidman proved that she's far from the villain she plays in The Golden Compass in real life when she hosted a special screening of the fantasy film for children from Sydney Children's Hospital Randwick and their families.

Kidman portrays scholar and explorer Marisa Coulter in the movie which was screened to a packed theatre at Sydney's Moore Park. Kidman posed for photos and signed autographs for about 10 minutes.

Kidman said about the screening: "This is a small gesture and I would just like to say I wish you all a merry Christmas and a happy new year," she said. "I play a villain in this film, so to all the little kids – don't stay."

The star said she would return next year with another treat. "I hope to come back next year and present the film I have just been making, Australia," she said to loud applause.

She was presented with a bouquet of flowers by a seven-year-old cancer patient and one small child summed up the visit in a manner that only a child could, saying, "She's very tall."
