US singer Jill Scott, who stars in the forthcoming BBC pilot for The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency, has paid tribute to British filmmaker Anthony Minghella who died on Tuesday following surgery for cancer.

Minghella, who most famously helmed The English Patient, directed the two-hour pilot in which Scott stars with Dreamgirls actress Anika Noni Rose.

Scott said the Oscar-winning director was: "Much more than a TRUE artist who thrilled in offering his divine gift with the world, Anthony Minghella was a dear, dear trusted friend," said Scott in a statement. "My heart aches with grief. Words can not express how deeply he will be missed or how deeply he was loved."
