Richard fights off the competition

Richard Griffiths didn't think twice when he was offered a part in new film Venus, he revealed.

The actor, star of the Harry Potter movies and The History Boys, appears alongside Peter O'Toole and Leslie Phillips in the movie directed by Roger Michell.

"If Roger Michell's doing a movie do I want to be in it?" laughed the larger-than-life star. "Yes!"

In fact, he said, that when a script is being touted about, the competition can be fierce.

"Half the neighbourhood will dive on it for the nearest chance to be in it," he said, adding that he had found his co-stars to be "wonderful people".

And the actor confided to reporters at the gala screening of the movie: "I always find these things a bit difficult."

He remarked of the waiting cameras: "You end up looking as though you're completely stoned - although I'm sad to say that I'm not."
