DVD Review

It has been twenty-eight days since Jim (Cilian Murphy), a young bicycle courier, was knocked off his bike and injured in a car accident. He wakes from a coma in a London hospital to find the entire city deserted. But Jim's terror begins when he realises he isn't actually alone...

He learns that in the past 28 days a highly powerful and contagious test virus, carried by a monkey, has been released from a research facility by animal-rights activists and swept across Britain. Blood borne, the horrific virus affects humans in seconds, turning them into murderous, cannibalistic zombies.

After coming across a handful of uninfected people (Naomie Harris, Noah Huntley, Brendan Gleeson and Megan Burns) Jim teams up with them for a bitter struggle to get out of the city to a military encampment at Manchester, where they hear on the radio that survivors are gathering. But once they arrive at the base, led by Major Henry West (Christopher Eccleston), they find they have more on their hands than just zombies...

Part meditation on what happens to people when their humanity is reduced to a basic need for survival, part jumpy horror flick with a fair amount of blood and gore, 28 Days Later is an intelligent, well-crafted horror set in a not-so-unrealistic dystopia.

Extras include commentary by director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland, audio tracks, three alternative endings with commentary, deleted scenes, making of, galleries, soundtrack and animated storyboard. This special edition also has an exclusive sneak peek at the cinematic sequel 28 Weeks Later through behind-the-scenes footage, and an exclusive 28 Days Later: The Aftermath animated featurette that bridges the storyline between the two films.
