In a titanic struggle between one critically acclaimed, feel-good juggernaut and a highly depressing tuk-tuk of a film; "Slumdog Millionaire", with 11 BAFTA nominations to its name, has nabbed the top spot at the UK Box Office and out-manoeuvred Will Smith's morose "Seven Pounds" in the process. The latter took a solid £1.5 million on its opening weekend if only because of its leading man. Down two places to number 3 then is Seann William Scott and Paul Rudd in the crowd-pleasing "Role Models", which just managed to get in ahead of "My Bloody Valentine 3D" - a new entry at 4. "My Bloody Valentine" took a strong £1.3 million on its debut and that means that it's officially the UK's highest opening for a 3D event...ever!
Down at 5 are the warring duo of Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway in "Bride Wars", still with enough charm left in the tank to best the ever-so-cute-army on show in "Beverly Hills Chihuahua", which opens at 6. Finding little favour at the Box Office still is Ed Zwick's "Defiance" down at 7 with, surprise of the week, "The Wrestler" only managing to nab a space at number 8 and that's despite all those starry reviews and award wins. "Yes Man" meanwhile is finally running out of juice at 9 and we're saying goodbye to "Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa" this week at 10.
