With the current Biggie Smalls biopic Notorious reaching cinemas, surely it could only be a matter of time before a movie focussing on the late rapper's rival Tupac Shakur would follow.

It has emerged that such a film about the West Coast star, who was killed in 1996, had been planned but a legal dispute has thwarted the project.

The production company Morgan Creek has filed suit against Amaru Entertainment, which is run run by Tupac’s mother, Afeni Shakur, saying it reneged on an agreement to sell his life rights for a film, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Morgan Creek say the two companies had a written contract but a lawyer for Amaru Entertainment said, “There is no agreement with Morgan Creek, there never was, and there never will be.”

There have been numerous documentaries about Tupac, who starred in 1993 film Poetic Justice with Janet Jackson.
